Vezirköprü lies in the interior of Samsun Province, on the uplands between the Black Sea coast and central Anatolia. On a map, it is a compact town whose streets spread from an older centre over the gently rolling ground, with roads leading out across farmland, orchards and wooded hills toward the surrounding villages.
The town takes its name, 'the vizier's bridge', from Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, the seventeenth-century Ottoman grand vizier associated with this area and founder of the Köprülü family of statesmen. Forested highlands, including the Kunduz forests, lie within the district, and the Kızılırmak river and its reservoirs pass not far to the east.
