Voinjama is the capital of Lofa County, in the far north of Liberia, close to the borders with Guinea and Sierra Leone. The town sits in hilly, green country where forest and farmland alternate. From above, its streets do not form a strict grid. They follow the terrain in loose curves and gather around a central area that serves as the county's administrative and market hub.
The town lies on routes that have long connected northern Liberia with its neighbours, and it has played a part in regional trade. Like much of Lofa County, it went through hard years during Liberia's civil conflicts and has been rebuilding since.
