Waiblingen lies north-east of Stuttgart in the valley of the Rems, which winds through the town in a series of bends. The old town sits on raised ground beside the river, a compact oval of lanes with parts of its medieval walls still standing. Newer districts spread along the valley and up the slopes, where vineyards and orchards appear at the edge of the map.
The town's name has an unexpected legacy: the Staufer dynasty was linked to Waiblingen, and the Italian term Ghibelline, used for the imperial faction in medieval politics, is generally traced to it. Today Waiblingen is the seat of the Rems-Murr district.
