Wandlitz is a municipality in Brandenburg, just north of Berlin, made up of several villages set among forests and lakes. On a map, water gives it a clear focus. The Wandlitzsee forms an elongated shape at the centre, with streets gathering along its shores, while other lakes, including the clear Liepnitzsee, appear as pale shapes within the surrounding woods.
The villages have kept their own patterns: older cores along through roads, and newer residential streets extending into the pine forest. Between them, long straight forest tracks and roads cross large wooded areas. The Heidekrautbahn railway links the area to Berlin, a thin line that ties the settlements together from south to north.
In the GDR years, a guarded forest settlement near Wandlitz housed the country's political leadership, which is why the name is still widely known in Germany. A Wandlitz map poster shows a quieter reality: lakes, woods and villages arranged in a loose, green pattern at the edge of the capital.
