Wanggou lies in the far northwest of Jiangsu, in the Xuzhou area, on the broad plain near the borders with Shandong and Anhui. The terrain is almost completely flat, and the map reflects that: straight roads, regular blocks and an orderly network of rural lanes connecting the town to the villages around it.
The plain here has long been shaped by water management, with irrigation and drainage channels running through the fields. On the map these appear as fine lines between parcels of farmland, sometimes parallel to the roads and sometimes cutting across them.
