Wenshan City lies in south-eastern Yunnan, in a basin surrounded by karst hills. On a map the city stretches along the Panlong River, with a compact centre of regular blocks and newer districts extending along the valley floor. Beyond the built-up area, the landscape breaks into irregular hills and farmland, and the roads follow the lower ground between them.
It is the seat of the Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, a region with large Zhuang, Miao and Yi communities. Wenshan is especially known across China for sanqi, also called Panax notoginseng, a medicinal root grown widely in the prefecture and traded in the city.
