Werdohl lies deep in the Sauerland, in the Märkischer Kreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the Lenne cuts a narrow valley through forested hills. From above, the town has no grid and no ring. It follows the river. Houses, roads and the railway all fit into the thin strips of flat land the water leaves behind.
On the map the Lenne is the main line. It bends back on itself more than once, so the built-up areas look like several clusters linked by bridges rather than one compact centre. Side valleys branch off between the hills, each with its own lane of houses, and the blank wooded slopes around them turn into wide areas of white space.
The town grew on metalworking and industry, and the long factory buildings on the valley floor still show up as heavy rectangles among the smaller residential blocks. Valley-floor railway
The railway follows the river through the narrow valley, keeping close to the water and the main road. The three parallel lines give the composition a strong sense of direction.
Wooded side valleys
Smaller valleys run up into the hills, each lined with a single road and a band of houses. Between them the forested slopes stay open, which gives the print room to breathe.
