Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, and from above it shows the Great Plains at their most orderly: a square-mile grid of section-line roads running to the horizon in every direction. The Arkansas River cuts diagonally through that grid, and the Little Arkansas meets it just west of downtown. The two rivers are the only curves in an otherwise ruled landscape.
Downtown sits on the east bank, with the brick warehouse streets of Old Town nearby. Kellogg Avenue, carrying US-54, crosses the whole city east to west as a freeway. Parks and trails follow the river banks, so the water is lined with green on both sides.
Wichita is known as the Air Capital of the World because of its long history of aircraft manufacturing.
