Witzenhausen sits in northern Hesse, on the Werra River, where the valley winds between wooded hills. The river crosses the map in broad curves, and a bridge links the two banks. The compact old town sits on one side, its streets following the outline of the former town walls, and beyond it the slopes are covered with fields and orchards.
