Xingren lies in southwestern Guizhou, in Qianxinan Prefecture, one of the most distinctive karst landscapes in China. From above, the town fills a patch of flat ground, and its roads and blocks spread across it until they meet the sudden rise of limestone hills. The result is a map whose edges are drawn as much by geology as by planning.
Recent decades have brought broad new avenues and large residential blocks, laid out in a regular pattern that contrasts with the irregular surroundings.
