Zégoua lies in the Sikasso Region at the southern tip of Mali, right at the border with Côte d'Ivoire. It is the main road crossing between the two countries on this route, and the town's form follows from that. The main road is its spine, and the settlement spreads out on either side of it.
From above, Zégoua looks like many Sahelian and Sudanian border towns. A through road carries lorries and buses, a looser network of sandy lanes branches off it, and compounds become more scattered towards the edges. Around it the savanna is marked by field plots and footpaths, not by paved streets.

Road as spine
The main highway runs straight through town, and most of the settlement is arranged along it. It is the heaviest line on the poster and anchors the whole composition.

Past the built-up area, tracks and field edges fan out across wooded savanna. The map fades gradually from settlement to countryside instead of stopping at a hard edge.
