Zentsuji lies on the Sanuki plain in western Kagawa Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku. It is known as the birthplace of Kūkai, the monk also called Kōbō Daishi, who founded Shingon Buddhism in the ninth century. The temple of Zentsuji, one of the three most important sites associated with him, is the town's centre and one of the stops on the Shikoku pilgrimage of eighty-eight temples.
On the map the temple precinct stands out as a large, orderly compound inside a looser pattern of town streets. Around it, the Sanuki plain is scattered with irrigation ponds, a feature of Kagawa, where rainfall is scarce and farmers have stored water for centuries.
