Zhangzhou lies on the plain of the Jiulong River in southern Fujian, west of Xiamen, and on a map the river is the strongest feature. It flows through the city in wide curves and splits into branches, with bridges linking the districts on each bank. The historic centre sits north of the main channel, while newer districts fan out across the flat, fertile plain.
The city's old quarter keeps rows of arcaded shophouses, known as qilou, along its older streets, a style common in southern China. Zhangzhou is also known for its narcissus flowers, grown on the plain for centuries. Within the wider prefecture stand several of the famous Fujian tulou, round earthen houses that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
