Zhaodun is a town in northern Jiangsu, in the Xuzhou area, on the level plain that stretches north toward Shandong. From above it looks like many market towns in this part of China. A central cluster of streets and residential compounds is surrounded by long, straight roads and rectangular fields, laid out on ground with almost no relief.
With no hills or coastline to bend them, the roads run in clean lines, and irrigation channels and small waterways between the fields follow the same pattern. Villages appear across the countryside at regular intervals, each a small knot of buildings along its own lane. On a map this gives the wider landscape a rhythmic, almost woven quality.
