Ardabīl Map Poster
Ardabīl sits on a high plateau in northwestern Iran, not far from the Caspian coast and the border with Azerbaijan. To the west rises the volcanic peak of Mount Sabalan, snow-capped for much of the year, and the city is known across Iran for its cold winters. The Balikhli Chay river runs through the city and gives the street pattern a natural line to follow.
The city is the ancestral home of the Safavid dynasty, which ruled Iran from the sixteenth century. At its heart stands the shrine of Sheikh Safi al-Din, the Sufi master from whom the dynasty descended. The complex of tombs, courtyards and prayer halls was listed by UNESCO in 2010. The famous Ardabil Carpet, now in London, was made for this shrine.
An Ardabīl map poster shows the older city as a close network of lanes around the shrine and the bazaar. Later avenues cut straight lines through it, and newer districts extend outward across the plain. With the river, the ring roads and the open plateau beyond, the map is dense at the centre and spacious at the edges.
