Adapazarı Map Poster & Print
Adapazarı is the central city of Sakarya Province in northwestern Turkey, set on a broad, flat plain formed by the Sakarya River. Its name recalls its origins as a market on an island-like tract of land between waterways. Farmland surrounds it on most sides, and the Sakarya itself curves past the city before heading north to the Black Sea.
The plain gives the map a low, open character, with streets spreading in all directions without hills to guide them. Much of the city was rebuilt after the 1999 İzmit earthquake, which caused severe damage here, and newer districts have a more regular, planned layout than the old centre. Lake Sapanca lies a short distance to the west.
Near the city stands the Sangarius Bridge, a stone bridge built under the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the sixth century.
