Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, stretching north from the mainland toward the border with Mexico. Its northern tip is separated from the Yucatán coast only by the narrow Bacalar Chico channel. From above it is a long, thin strip of land, lined on the east by the sea and on the west by shallow lagoons and mangroves.
San Pedro, the island's town, occupies the southern end. Its streets run in a few long lines parallel to the beach, with wooden docks reaching into the water like the teeth of a comb. North of town development thins to a single route and scattered resorts, then gives way to wetlands and the protected land of Bacalar Chico.
Offshore, beyond a band of calm shallow water, runs the Belize Barrier Reef, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve lies near the island's southern tip. Bacalar Chico channel
At the far north a narrow channel separates the caye from the Mexican coast, a thin sliver of water that marks both the island's end and an international border.
