Bad Rappenau lies in the Kraichgau, the gently rolling hill country of northern Baden-Württemberg, a short distance north-west of Heilbronn. Its story changed in the nineteenth century when salt deposits were found beneath the town. They led to a saltworks and later to the brine baths that gave it the 'Bad' in its name. Today it is known above all as a spa town.
On a map, the main town forms a compact core with a moated castle and spa park near its centre, while the rest of the municipality spreads out as separate villages linked by country roads.
