Bafra sits near the mouth of the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, at the point where it spreads its last stretch into a wide, flat delta before reaching the Black Sea. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets on the river's edge. Beyond it, fields divided by long straight lines take over the plain, and the coast bends gently at the horizon.
The Kızılırmak Delta is one of the most important wetlands on the Black Sea coast. Its lagoons, reed beds and marshes draw large numbers of migrating birds every season. On a map this shows up as a scatter of open water shapes and soft edges between the town and the sea, a pattern very different from the tight streets at the centre.
A Bafra map poster shows how a working agricultural town fits against a living river system. The region has long been known for its tobacco and for a regional flatbread that carries the town's name. Lagoons and marshes lie between the farmland and the Black Sea. They break the regular field pattern with irregular shapes of open water, which gives the northern part of the map its texture.

Long, straight rural roads divide the flat delta into strips and blocks. Printed in fine lines, they surround the compact town centre with an almost geometric frame.
