Baisha is a town in Jiangjin District, in the southwest of Chongqing municipality, on the bank of the Yangtze River. On a map the river dominates everything. It sweeps through the frame as a wide, dark ribbon, and the town lies in a long band along one shore instead of spreading evenly in all directions.
The terrain here is typical of the Chongqing hills, and it shapes the street pattern. Roads follow the contours in long curves, older lanes run down toward the waterfront, and newer blocks sit on flatter ground set back from the river. Baisha has long worked as a river port, and its place on the water explains much of its layout.

Near the riverbank the street pattern tightens into short lanes and steps that run down toward the water. This is the oldest-looking and most intricate part of the drawing.

Away from the river, roads bend with the hills in long, looping lines. The pattern is common across the Chongqing region and quite unlike the straight grids of the plains.
