Batu lies in a high valley in East Java, surrounded by volcanic mountains including Arjuno and Panderman. On a map the town is compact at its centre, around the square and the main streets, then spreads unevenly along roads that follow the slopes. Farmland, orchards and forest press in from every side, and the winding mountain roads give the edges of the map a loose, organic character.
Separated from Malang Regency as a city in its own right in 2001, Batu is known across Indonesia for its cool climate, apple orchards and theme parks. Families from Surabaya and beyond come for weekend trips, and the local economy mixes farming, horticulture and tourism. The surrounding hills also hold hot springs and waterfalls, part of what made the area a mountain retreat since the colonial period.
