Belleville is laid out on the orderly grid you expect in the American Midwest, but the pattern has a clear centre. Main Street and the main cross streets meet at the Public Square, and the densest blocks gather around it. Farther out, the grid loosens into curving subdivision streets, and the interstate runs along the town's northern side.
Belleville is the county seat of St. Clair County and sits in the Metro East part of Greater St. Louis, southeast of the Mississippi. In the nineteenth century it drew a large wave of German immigrants, and that heritage still shapes the brick houses and churches of its older districts. Scott Air Force Base lies a short distance to the east.

The creek runs through Belleville on a diagonal and ignores the rectilinear streets around it. Its winding line and green banks add a soft, organic curve to an otherwise regular plan.
Grid meets suburb
