Bitung Map Poster
Bitung lies at the north-eastern end of Sulawesi, on the eastern side of the Minahasa peninsula, and its map is defined by the Lembeh Strait. The city lines the western shore of this narrow channel, with the long outline of Lembeh Island just across the water. Streets run along the coast and climb into the hills behind, while port facilities and piers extend into the strait.
The strait's sheltered deep water made Bitung one of the main harbours of eastern Indonesia and a major fishing port, especially for tuna. It is also known among divers worldwide for muck diving in Lembeh Strait, and the Tangkoko nature reserve just north of the city protects forest that is home to tarsiers and crested black macaques.
