Botevgrad lies in a broad basin north-east of Sofia, where the flat valley floor meets rising slopes. From above, the town looks compact and well ordered. Streets form a fairly regular pattern around a central square, and the edges of the built-up area are defined by fields on the level ground and by wooded hills climbing around the basin.
For centuries the town was known as Orhanie. In 1934 it took its present name in honour of the poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev. Its best-known landmark is the clock tower on the main square, built in the nineteenth century and still the reference point for the town centre. On the map, the square appears as a clear open space with the principal streets arranged around it.
