Boudjima is a commune in the Tizi Ouzou province of Algeria, in the hill country of Greater Kabylie north of the provincial capital. It is not one compact town. It is a group of villages spread over ridges and spurs. On a map that shows up as small clusters of streets sitting on high ground, with gaps of open slope, orchard and scrub between them.
The road network is what gives the area its shape. Lanes climb from the valleys, bend around the contours and meet at the crests where the houses gather. Seen from above, these lines read almost like a drawing of the terrain, because each curve records a slope that the builders had to go around.
A Boudjima map poster reduces all of this to thin black lines on white. Without colour or relief shading, the pattern of settlement becomes the subject: tight knots of streets on the ridges, loose threads of road between them, and the empty space that stands for the hillsides of Kabylie.
