Caotang lies in the mountains of eastern Chongqing, in the region of the upper Yangtze known for the Three Gorges. On a map the town is shaped almost entirely by relief: streets squeeze along the narrow valley floors, and buildings follow the slope where the land allows. There is little room for a regular grid, so the pattern that emerges is linear and branching.
Around the built-up area, the lines thin out into winding mountain roads that switch back as they climb, and small streams feed down toward larger waterways.
