Chocope lies in the La Libertad region of northern Peru, in the valley of the Chicama River a short distance inland from the Pacific. The surrounding land is flat and heavily farmed, and from above the town appears as a tight block of streets within a wide pattern of rectangular fields, irrigation channels and farm tracks that stretch toward the desert hills.
The Chicama valley has long been one of the country's sugarcane districts, and the agricultural landscape shapes everything around Chocope. The town itself follows the familiar Spanish colonial logic of a central square with a grid of blocks spreading outward, while the main road running north along the coast passes close by and links it to larger towns in the valley.
