Develi is a town in Kayseri Province in central Anatolia, set on high ground south of Erciyes, the great volcanic cone that is the tallest peak in the region. The land slopes gently away from the mountain, and the town spreads across it in a pattern of long streets, with newer neighbourhoods reaching outward over what was once farmland and orchards.
To the south-west lies the basin of the Sultan Marshes, a wide wetland of reeds, shallow lakes and salt flats that is protected as a national park and known for its migratory birds. On a map it appears as a broad open area with soft, irregular edges, a striking contrast to the regular blocks of the town.
Develi has a long history as a market town of the Kayseri plateau, with a Seljuk-era great mosque among its older buildings and a wide agricultural hinterland.
