Dhar sits on the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, west of Indore. The town's map is shaped by its lakes and its fort: the old walled fort stands on a low hill, and several tanks, some created centuries ago, lie among the streets. Around them, the older town is a dense web of narrow lanes, while newer districts extend along main roads.
Dhar was the capital of the Paramara dynasty in the medieval period, and it is closely associated with Raja Bhoj, the eleventh-century ruler known for his scholarship and patronage. The Bhojshala complex is linked to that era. The famous hilltop ruins of Mandu, one of the most visited historic sites in the state, lie within Dhar district.
