Dīg Map Poster
Dīg, also written Deeg, lies in eastern Rajasthan, north of Bharatpur, on the flat plains of the Braj region. On a map the town is a dense, irregular cluster of lanes. At its heart sits a strikingly geometric shape: the palace complex, with rectangular gardens, straight water channels and two large reservoirs, the Gopal Sagar and Rup Sagar.
The Jat rulers of Bharatpur built the palaces in the eighteenth century as a summer retreat, most notably Maharaja Suraj Mal. The complex is famous for its hundreds of fountains, which are still turned on for special occasions, including a well-known display during festivals. Next to the gardens stand the walls of Deeg Fort, an older stronghold of the same rulers.
A Dīg map poster sets this formal, Mughal-inspired geometry against the organic streets of an old market town. The crisp rectangles of the gardens, the still surfaces of the reservoirs and the angular fort walls give the sheet a clear centre. The surrounding lanes add fine, dense texture in every direction.
