Dompu is the main town of Dompu Regency on the island of Sumbawa, in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara. It sits on low ground in the eastern half of the island, with rice fields and dry hills around it. On a map the town is a compact network of streets gathered around a central area, with roads leading out to villages in several directions.
The island around it is full of contrasts. Sumbawa has a long, irregular coastline of bays and headlands. To the northwest rises Mount Tambora, whose eruption in 1815 was one of the largest in recorded history and changed weather around the world the following year. Part of the volcano lies within the regency.
