Enclosing hills
Hills rise around the valley on all sides, so the city's streets end in an irregular ring where the terrain becomes too steep to build on.

El Cajon Map Poster & Print
El Cajon lies in a broad valley about fifteen miles east of downtown San Diego. Its name, Spanish for the box, is often explained by the hills that surround it. From above, the city is a flat, mostly regular grid of streets and suburban blocks that stops where the slopes begin. That gives it one of the clearest natural outlines of any city in the county.
Interstate 8 runs through the city from east to west, and State Route 67 heads north; both appear as broad lines across the grid. Gillespie Field, a general aviation airport, takes up a large area on the north-western side. El Cajon also has one of the largest communities of Chaldean and Iraqi origin in the United States, visible in its shops and churches.
An El Cajon map poster makes the geography obvious: a dense urban valley floor, with the surrounding hills shown as the point where the street lines fade out. With the freeways, the airfield and the downtown blocks along Main Street, it is a clear and balanced composition.

Interstate 8
The freeway crosses the city from east to west, a wide, gently curving line that cuts through the otherwise even pattern of blocks.
Gillespie Field
The airport's runways and open ground form a large, distinctive shape in the north-west, one of the few big breaks in the urban grid.
