El Vendrell is the capital of the Baix Penedès comarca in Catalonia, located between Tarragona and Barcelona. From above, the municipality has two parts. The historic town lies a few kilometres inland, with a compact old centre of narrow streets around the church. On the coast, a series of resort neighbourhoods, including Coma-ruga and Sant Salvador, stretch along the beach.
Between them lies flat land of farms, vineyards and newer development, crossed by roads and the railway running parallel to the sea. El Vendrell is the birthplace of the cellist Pau Casals, and his summer house in Sant Salvador is now a museum. The town is also known for its human towers, the castells, a strong local tradition.
