Falkenberg lies on the coast of Halland in south-western Sweden, at the mouth of the Ätran river on the Kattegat. The river is known for its salmon, and fishing it has a long tradition. On the map, the Ätran runs through the town in a curve before reaching the sea, splitting the older quarters from the newer districts.
The old town sits on the river bank, a small area of low wooden houses and narrow lanes around the old church of St Laurentii. The Tullbron, an eighteenth-century stone bridge, crosses the Ätran here. South of town, Skrea strand is a long, straight sandy beach that gives the coastline a clean, simple line.
