Fengjia lies in the mountainous southeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and winding roads. Here flat land is scarce, and the town's shape on a map follows the terrain closely: streets run along the lower ground, bend with the contours and stop where the slopes become too steep to build on. The result is an organic footprint rather than a grid.
Around the town, roads switch back up hillsides and follow streams between the ridges, linking scattered villages and farmland.
