Geneva sits at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva, exactly where the Rhône flows out of the lake and heads toward France. On a map the lake narrows into a harbour and the river divides the city into two banks, joined by a series of bridges. The quays, parks and promenades along the shore trace a smooth curve on both sides of the water.
On the left bank, the old town climbs a hill topped by St Pierre Cathedral, where John Calvin preached during the Reformation. Its tightly packed, irregular streets contrast with the broader boulevards laid out after the old fortifications were removed in the nineteenth century. Out in the harbour, the Jet d'Eau sends a column of water high above the lake.
On the right bank, parkland rises toward the Palais des Nations, the European headquarters of the United Nations, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Further downstream, the Arve joins the Rhône in a clearly visible meeting of two rivers. Promenades and parks follow both shores of the harbour, and the Jet d'Eau stands just off the left bank as a fixed point on the water.
