Golconda Map Poster & Print
Golconda rises on a granite hill on the western side of Hyderabad, and its fort shapes everything around it. The citadel was built up over centuries and became the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the sixteenth century. Heavy walls enclose it, and their irregular outline follows the terrain rather than any geometric plan. From above, the fortress reads as a dense, bounded core surrounded by later city growth.
Inside and around the walls the streets are narrow and bend sharply, a pattern left by a defended settlement where space was tight. Outside, the map loosens into the wider road network of modern Hyderabad. A short distance away, the domed Qutb Shahi tombs stand in their own walled grounds. The contrast between the fortified knot and its open surroundings gives the composition a strong centre.
Golconda was once famous as a trading centre for diamonds mined in the region, and its name became a byword for great wealth. Visitors also know the fort's acoustic trick: a handclap at the entrance gate is said to carry up to the pavilion on the summit.
