Gonaïves Map Poster & Print
Gonaïves lies on the northwestern coast of Haiti, at the head of a bay that opens onto the Gulf of Gonâve. The city occupies a low, flat plain between the sea and dry hills, and most of its map is a regular grid of streets running inland from the waterfront. Salt flats and wetlands edge the coast, while roads lead north toward Cap-Haïtien and south toward Port-au-Prince.
The city holds a central place in Haitian history. On 1 January 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Haiti here, which is why Gonaïves is known as the City of Independence. Its low-lying position has also made it vulnerable, and the city suffered severe flooding during the hurricanes and tropical storms of 2004 and 2008.
A Gonaïves map poster brings out the city's clear structure: the coastline and bay, the grid of the historic centre and the roads fanning out across the plain. It is a way to hold on to a place of national importance, and to the everyday streets where families have lived, traded and rebuilt through difficult years.

Historic grid
Straight streets run inland from the waterfront in a regular grid around the central square. This is the densest and most recognisable part of the city.
National roads
Main routes leave the city toward Cap-Haïtien in the north and Port-au-Prince in the south, drawing long lines across the plain beyond the built-up area.

De ce Gonaïves
O hartă care înseamnă ceva
For Haitians at home and in the diaspora, Gonaïves carries the weight of 1804. A map of the city is a way to honour that history, or simply to keep the streets of a family home close, wherever you live now.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps a family name or 1 January 1804, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as HD files or a printed poster.
