Gramado lies in the Serra Gaúcha, the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Its streets follow uneven ground. Some run along ridges, others curve down into valleys, and wooded slopes and parks break up the built-up areas. The map shows a town shaped by hills rather than by a strict plan.
Gramado is one of Brazil's best-known mountain destinations. It is known for architecture inspired by German and Italian immigrant traditions, for the Gramado Film Festival and for its elaborate Christmas season. Lago Negro, a small lake surrounded by trees, is among its most familiar sights.
