Greenfield lies in southern Monterey County, in the long, flat Salinas Valley between Soledad and King City. The town is a straightforward grid on the western side of the valley floor, with US Route 101 running along its edge and farmland pressing right up to the last streets. Beyond the fields, the valley walls rise on both sides.
This is one of California's most productive farming regions, with lettuce, broccoli and other vegetables grown on a huge scale and vineyards climbing the slopes toward the Santa Lucia Range. The Salinas River flows north through the valley nearby, and the Arroyo Seco comes down from the mountains to the west to join it.
