Hayling Island lies off the Hampshire coast between Langstone Harbour to the west and Chichester Harbour to the east. It is linked to the mainland by a single road bridge at Langstone. On a map it has an unmistakable outline. The island is wide along its southern shore and narrows to the north, with tidal channels, mudflats and inlets around every edge.
The south coast is the most built-up part, with residential streets running back from a long shingle beach that faces the English Channel. Further north, the island becomes quieter, with fields, marshes and scattered lanes. A former railway line along the western shore is now the Hayling Billy Trail, a path for walkers and cyclists. The island is also often named as the birthplace of windsurfing.
