Hernani lies in Gipuzkoa, a few kilometres south of San Sebastián, in the valley of the river Urumea. On a map the river curves through the lower ground while the historic centre sits slightly higher, a compact set of stone streets around the town hall and the parish church. Newer districts extend down toward the valley floor and along the roads leading north to the coast.
The Basque hills close in on every side, so the town is fitted to the valley rather than spread out. Industrial buildings, the railway and main roads share the flat ground along the Urumea, while farmhouses and woodland cover the slopes. The contrast between the dense valley and the scattered hillside pattern is the most striking feature of the map.
Hernani is known for its cider houses, where the season opens each winter with cider poured straight from the barrel, and for Chillida Leku, the museum and sculpture park created by Eduardo Chillida on the town's outskirts.
