Hirekerūr is a taluk headquarters in Haveri district, in the northwest of Karnataka. From above, the town is a dense centre of narrow streets and closely packed plots, with roads leaving it in several directions toward the surrounding villages. The built area thins quickly at the edges, where the map turns into fields and the irregular lines of rural tracks.
In Kannada the name is commonly read as the town of the big tank. It is a reminder of how much settlement on the Deccan plateau has depended on stored water.
