Lahat is a small town in the Kinta Valley of Perak, a short distance from Ipoh. The valley was once one of the richest tin-mining areas in the world, and Lahat grew during that period as one of the settlements that served the mines. From above, the town is a modest grid of streets surrounded by greenery, former mining land and scattered housing.
The legacy of tin mining is still visible on the map. Former mining pits, now filled with water, appear as irregular ponds and lakes around the town, while the limestone hills that characterise the Kinta Valley rise nearby.
