Maying is a town in Gansu province in north-western China, set in the mountains of the province's far south. With around sixteen thousand residents, it is a local centre in a landscape where flat land is scarce. The map shows what that means in practice: settlements and roads follow the valleys, and the ridges between them stay mostly empty.
The street network is long and narrow rather than round. Buildings line the main road and the watercourse beside it, and short side lanes climb a little way up the slopes before stopping. Beyond the town, the same road carries on through the valley to the next settlement, a single thread that links the whole district.
