Monastir lies on a small promontory on Tunisia's eastern coast, where the shore of the Sahel turns and points toward the sea. On a map, water surrounds the old centre on several sides. The compact medina sits just inland, and resort areas spread along the beaches to either side.
The city's best-known structure is the Ribat of Monastir, a fortress founded in the late eighth century as part of a chain of coastal defences. It is one of the oldest in the Maghreb. Monastir is also the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, and his mausoleum stands close to the ribat.
A Monastir map poster shows a coastal town in which each element has a clear role. Rectangular fort walls face the sea, the lanes of the medina are dense, the marina basin cuts into the coastline, and newer grids extend inland toward the airport.
