Palma spreads along the curve of the Bay of Palma on the southwest coast of Mallorca. From above, the sea fills the bottom of the frame. The Passeig Marítim traces the waterfront, marinas and harbour moles jut into the bay, and the city fans inland across a gently rising plain toward the hills of the Serra de Tramuntana.
The old town is easy to spot. Its maze of narrow, winding medieval streets is enclosed by the ring of avenues, the Avingudes, that replaced the city walls. La Seu cathedral stands right at the water's edge above the old sea wall. West of the centre, Bellver Castle sits on a wooded hill, and its unusual circular plan shows up clearly at poster scale.
Palma has been a port since Roman times and later came under Muslim and then Catalan rule. Each era left marks on the street pattern. The Sa Riera torrent once ran through the centre before it was diverted around the old town. On a hill west of the centre, the circular Gothic castle sits inside a park of winding paths. It is one of the few perfectly round landmarks you will find on any city map.
Harbour and marinas
Long breakwaters, ferry piers and marina basins reach into the bay, giving the waterfront a sharp, engineered edge beneath the curving line of the seafront promenade.
