Palmeirândia Map Poster & Print
Palmeirândia lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a vast lowland region in northern Maranhão, west of São Luís. From above, the town forms a small, loosely regular grid of streets around a central area, with roads leading out across flat land. What surrounds it matters more to the map: wetlands, seasonal lakes and fields that are partly underwater for much of the rainy season.
The Baixada is one of Brazil's great wetland landscapes, and the rhythm of life here follows the seasons of flood and drought. When the water rises, fields become lakes and some routes are best travelled by boat. In the dry season the same land becomes pasture. The name Palmeirândia refers to the palm trees that are common in this part of Maranhão.
A Palmeirândia map poster places a small grid in a landscape defined by water. The streets are compact and familiar, while the wetlands around them become broad, calm shapes. It suits people from the town and families who moved to São Luís or further away, and who still remember the view across the flooded fields after the rains.
