Perote sits high on the plateau of western Veracruz, in a dry basin that feels far from the humid coast the state is known for. The town itself is compact, a grid of blocks around a central square. Beyond the last streets the pattern opens into farmland, and on a map the roads fan out toward Xalapa in one direction and Puebla in the other.
The fortress of San Carlos de Perote is the best-known feature. It was built in the eighteenth century to guard the colonial road between the port of Veracruz and the interior. From above it is unmistakable: a square with pointed bastions at each corner, the classic star outline of military engineering of that era. Over the centuries it has also served as a prison.
