Porto Empedocle is a port town on the southern coast of Sicily, a few kilometres from Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples. The map is organised around the harbour. Long breakwaters extend into the Mediterranean, and quays and industrial areas line the waterfront. Behind the shore, the town climbs onto the terraces and low hills.
The town is closely tied to literature. Andrea Camilleri was born here, and his fictional town of Vigàta, home of Inspector Montalbano, draws heavily on Porto Empedocle. Luigi Pirandello was born nearby, at the country house known as Caos. On the waterfront, the sixteenth-century Tower of Charles V still stands as a reminder of the town's role in coastal defence.
West along the coast lie the white marl cliffs of the Scala dei Turchi, one of the best-known sights of this shoreline. A Porto Empedocle map poster traces the curve of that coast, the geometry of the port and the streets rising from it. It turns a working harbour into a calm, graphic image.
